How we do this

We prepare the environment, provide the resources and stimulus and take a proactive approach to engage with children as they are learning. We use language to describe what is happening and help to scaffold children’s learning and understanding. This involvement is thoughtful, purposeful and focused. Being intentional about literacy and numeracy means taking an active role in promoting it, through the experiences we provide and also through the way that we interact with children and deliberately focus on literacy and numeracy concepts.

Literacy and Numeracy

Literacy and Numeracy is incorporated throughout the curriculum and is integrated in all types of play. While incidental learning is an essential strategy in play-based learning, it is important to recognise that not all learning will happen in this way. Incidental learning can be a powerful and effective method and is encouraged. However, if we want children to make important connections and to transfer knowledge and understanding between experiences, then we need to think beyond a purely incidental approach. This is particularly true for complex ideas such as those involved in literacy and numeracy. We want children to make important connections and to transfer knowledge and understanding between experiences. This will involve spontaneous responses to children’s play where we take advantage of opportunities to talk about literacy and numeracy as they arise, as well as more carefully planned experiences  that we have deliberately designed to introduce or extend an idea or concept.

We have a wide range of books and actively promote reading, even if it is, only looking at pictures. Introducing children to books early has huge social and educational advantages. Reading to toddlers sets the foundation for later independent reading. Reading problems can be challenging to fix later on and, if exposure to reading starts in the pre-school years, not only can most reading problems be prevented, but children also develop a love for reading which lasts a lifetime.
